When to Schedule Landscaping and Concrete Work in Northern Illinois

Outdoor work in northern Illinois runs on a shorter calendar than most people plan around. The ground freezes, and when it does, several types of work simply stop. Knowing roughly how the year runs makes it much easier to get the slot you want rather than the one that is left.

Early spring: cleanup, mulch and planning

As soon as the ground thaws and dries enough to walk on without damaging it, spring cleanups start. Beds get cleared of winter debris, edges get recut, and mulch goes down.

This is also the best time to have a conversation about bigger work. Schedules for patios, walls and concrete fill up during spring for jobs that will not be built until summer. A call in March about an August patio is early in the right way.

Late spring: planting, sod and grading

Planting and sod do best when the weather is mild and there is reliable moisture, which makes late spring one of the two ideal windows. New sod rooting in June is under far less stress than sod laid in the heat of August.

Grading also fits well here. It has to happen before sod or hardscape anyway, and doing it in spring means the rest of the work can follow through summer.

Summer: hardscape and concrete

This is the main season for patios, walkways, retaining walls and concrete flatwork. Long days, warm temperatures and dry ground are exactly what excavation, base building and pouring want.

Summer is also when maintenance matters most. Beds that were cleaned in April are filling back in by July, which is the difference between a property that was landscaped once and one that looks maintained.

Early fall: the second best planting window

Fall is genuinely excellent for planting and sod, and it is underused. The soil is still warm, the air is cooler, and there is usually more rain. Roots establish without the plant fighting summer heat at the same time.

Hardscape and concrete continue through fall. The limit is not the calendar, it is the ground temperature.

Late fall and winter: the window closes

Once the ground freezes, sod, planting and concrete pours stop. Trimming, branch removal and storm cleanup carry on year round, because those do not depend on workable soil.

This is also the quietest time to plan next year's project. A design worked out in January is ready to build the moment the ground opens up.

The practical advice

Call earlier than feels necessary. The best slots in this trade go to people who called a season ahead, and the difference between booking in February and booking in June is often several weeks of waiting.
